What are self-adhesive gaskets?

 

Self-adhesive gaskets have a pressure sensitive adhesive laminated to one surface with a removable release liner covering and protecting it.  Developing a gasket with an adhesive backing can be helpful in assembly when the gasket needs to be fitted quickly so there is as little down time as possible.  The adhesive lining on the gasket helps with the fitting and doesn’t necessarily provide any sealing or structural role.  What it does help with is the gasket staying in place and lowers the risk of it deforming or slipping out of alignment with the mating parts in the assembly.

Choosing the correct release liner is also important.  It needs to come off with ease in the assembly process.    Easy liner removal occurs when the liner can be initially lifted with light pull force, then peels away from the gasket with minimal gasket stretch or deformation and remains intact without tearing.  Liner design may include systems such as tabs, potentially to support automated machine liner removal and gasket assembly.

Adhesive backing can be applied to many different materials, including solid and foam rubbers.  To determine if a self-adhesive gasket is best for your part project our engineers will need to know what environment the gasket will be in.  Areas like temperature, pressure, chemical resistance, and surface application will be considered.  Once these factors are discussed, our engineers can help you determine what material(s) will work best.
