The Increased Need for Face Shields During COVID-19
During the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increased need for personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE is protective gear that may help the wearer be better protected from infection and illness. One example of PPE equipment is a face shield. A person might choose to wear a face shield when they are more frequently exposed to people that may be infected. If it’s worn without a mask it should extend past the chin and wrap around the persons face.
Foam Strips Are a Comfortable Solution for Face Shields
When the clear plastic shield is secured by a head strap to the wearer, a foam strip seals air from being drawn over the top of the shield into the wearer’s nose and mouth during breathing. This foam strip spaces the shield away from the face and increases comfort for extended wear as a foam cushion.
Foam Strips with PSA Available from PGC
Polyurethane open cell foam is a frequent choice for face shield strips, after passing prototype testing. Design criteria that the foam must meet includes:
1. Compressibility to create a seal
2. Minimal skin irritation
3. Low cost, high volume production
4. Colors for branding
