Common Die Cutting Terms

DIE CUTTING
Using sharp edged cutting dies to cut out shapes from a wide range of materials. Materials like, rubber, foam, plastic and more.

KISS CUTTING
Cut to, but not through the liner.

KNOCK-OUT
A machine or any device that pushes out the scarp from a cut out in a die.

LAMINATE
Applying a layer of protective material.

NESTING
To maximize the material used on a similar or different job, parts are cut on the same material.

PUNCH
Used to cut out a variety of different shapes in die cutting.

RELEASE LINER
Prevents the sticky material from adhering to other surfaces prematurely while at the same time giving an easy removal from it.

SHIM
A thin strip of material that helps to align parts for a better fit.

PERFORATING RULE
A cutting die modified with a line of sharp teeth that leaves intermittent uncut segments of the material connected. Used to create easy tear-off portions of a part.
